About the book

Mark says: Someone is in big trouble until dedicated police officer, Zapper, is given the special gift that reminds us what Christmas, and all holidays are really about.  Santa’s Speeding Ticket tells the funny story of a magical night and a strange encounter, with animated illustrations by Daniel Traynor, and a surprise ending that makes this picture book a treasure for the whole family.  I wrote it in honor of the brave men and women of our police departments, and even their dogs, but also for everyone who believes as I do that laughter is the best medicine.  So what is the greatest gift we are given?

Excerpt

I'm Police Officer Zapper. I wasn't happy working on Christmas Eve.
Suddenly, a speeding blur tumbled me into the snow. I turned on my flashing lights and siren and chased after it.
It soared into the sky.
"Come down," I shouted.
When it landed, I couldn't believe my eyes!

Author Bio

Comical monsters and underdog heroes race through Mark's imagination and have won him many awards for his books and stories, but his favorite reward is hearing children laugh at his humorous adventures such as those in WELCOME TO MONSTROVIA, a new series and his hilarious new picture book, SANTA’S SPEEDING TICKET, with full color illustrations by Dan Traynor.

Mark won the Teacher's Choice Award (Learning Magazine) for THE ROCKHOUND SCIENCE MYSTERIES, where kids catch crazy crooks by fun experiments like making ice pops. He won First Prize in the Florida Writers' Association competition for his comical YA horror, THE MIDNIGHT DIET CLUB, now also a great audio book.

Mark contributed stories and was editor-in-chief for HOLIDAY HELPINGS, THE STORY SHOP, and CRITTER CAPERS, filled with funny stories for children and families. His adult stories have won many honors and appear in collections including the Journeys Anthologies and the Florida Writers' Association Collections.

Mark's award-winning adult series, ECTOS, THE GHOST DOCTOR'S ASSISTANT and ECTOS 2: THE BURNING, is published by Solstice. ECTOS: NIGHTMARE has been selected as one of only ten entries in Solstice's new anthology, NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP.

Mark thanks you for your support and a special thank you for those kind enough to add their reviews. "A few years ago, I got the greatest fan letter from a little boy thanking me for my ROCKHOUND detective series and ending with: "I know all authors are rich. Can I swim in your pool?" If I had one, you'd all be invited.

I asked Mark to tell us a bit about himself:

Do you have any favourite family Christmas traditions? If so, what are they?

We celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas so wherever my sons are we share the lighting of the candles by phone every year.  Christmas starts with us seeing Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase. It always makes us laugh and know that no matter what happens, our holiday won’t be as messed up. Then I read the true story of how my wife made Christmas special by letting two old ladies buy a Christmas tree she wanted to replace our scraggly small tree shortly after we married. That story drives the kids crazy, but always reminds me of her kindness which is what I think the holidays should be about.

When do you open your Christmas presents?

We always wait until Christmas morning. My younger son always announces, “He’s been here.” He’s done that for almost 30 years. Then one at a time we share our gifts with each other, youngest first. I usually write a poem or story so I share that last. They hate that. LOL

If you could invite any author living or dead to share your Christmas lunch, who would it be?

Not Steven King. He scares me. Just kidding. Charles Dickens. I’d want him to read A Christmas Carol out loud to us after our dinner.

What book would you like to find in your Christmas stocking?

I love them all so this is tough. A signed copy of the Old Testament. Seriously, a signed copy of Don Quijote, Man of La Mancha. The story of an old man who goes out to right the wrongs of the world is known as the first novel, and has always been a symbol for me of what I think we all need to do: “dream the impossible dream.” I didn’t want to read it when it was assigned in Spanish class, but it changed my life and I have Don Quijote posters and statues all over my office.
