KAT stands for Kids and Authors Together - or Karen and Ann together - as multi-published author Ann Evans (www.annevansbooks.co.uk) and I have joined forces for our KAT school visits. We are both passionate about reading and writing and love to share that passion with children, encouraging them to enjoy reading and writing too. We team up together and visit schools, both primary and secondary all over the country, running writing workshops, talking about being an author and reading from our own books. Between us, we are able to work with every year in the school. At the bargain price of £400 for a KAT visit, it means schools can get two authors for the price of one - Ann and I call it a BOGOF! We also both leave a free signed book for the school.
We are both Patrons of Reading and writing tutors. We had a vast experience of running workshops in schools, are DBS checked and have PL Insurance.
Here's a picture of us both with some of our books. A lot of people think we're sisters!
WHAT TO EXPECT ON A KAT VISIT TO YOUR SCHOOL
We usually begin the day with a lively assembly for the whole school. Here the children get to meet us both, learn how we started writing and see some of the books we've written. Both Ann and I have a few amusing anecdotes to tell about our writing careers, and there is usually five minutes or so at the end of assembly for any questions.
After assembly, I work with KS1 while Ann works with KS2, doing talks, workshops and getting the kids inspired to write, and read more! On average we run 4 or 5 sessions each of about 40 mins/1 hour duration. Yes! We work very hard!!
The results and feedback show that it's all worth it. Teachers are often amazed at the brilliant work the children produce in the sessions, and having an author visit is something that stays with the child for a long time afterwards.
